Modular base station shelter for mobile communications

APW is one of the world's largest manufacturers of shelters, the equipment rooms used to house the transmitting equipment at each cell in a mobile network.  The company currently has production facilities in the UK and Brazil; plans are well advanced for additional facilities in the UK, USA, and Germany.

The shelters are modular in construction, enabling them to be configured to meet the exact needs of individual service providers.  Typical shelter sizes are 2.5m - 4.8m long x 3.6m wide x 2.5m high, although any size is possible, including on-site erection for the larger models

APW offers many different levels of integration.  The entry-level product will be fitted with mains power distribution and forced air cooling.  More sophisticated thermal management will extend to an air conditioning system with, for European applications, a capacity of around 15kW; heaters will also be fitted.  Power management and battery back-up enclosure suites can be installed to derive the 48VDC and other low voltages needed to power the equipment, and fire detection and extinguishing systems and security alarms can also be fitted.  If required, the customer's equipment can be fitted and tested in the factory before shipping the unit to site as a "ready-to-run" assembly; APW even has partnership arrangements with civil engineering contractors who will undertake the site preparation ready to receive the unit.

As the 3G bandwagon gathers momentum, shelter demand is forecast to increase dramatically; the company is investing heavily in new manufacturing plant to meet its customers' expected needs.  When all the planned capacity comes on-stream later this year, a finished shelter will leave an APW factory every 7 minutes.
