The New Broadcasting House development is a ten-year long project, involving the refurbishment and modernisation of the original 1932 Broadcasting House for BBC Network Radio, followed by a new extension to house BBC World Service and BBC News. To manage the project, a multi-disciplinary project team was created, with contact continuity ensured by having one senior Enclosure Solutions executive responsible for customer liaison from developing the product specification, negotiating the commercial proposal and overseeing the project implementation. The original contract for 350 cabinets was for use by the Broadcast Department; subsequently, additional racks for the TV and IT Departments were also ordered. By working closely with engineers from BBC Solutions and their installation contractors, the differing needs of the three applications were satisfied by supplying modified variants of the core platform, the IMRAK 1400, which has been the European market leader in the networking cabinet sector for many years. Its design enables it to be configured in a virtually limitless number of different ways and its range of dedicated accessory products adds significantly to its functionality. The key engineering issues, which Enclosure Solutions worked closely with the BBC to resolve, were the need for as much cable space as possible behind the equipment, and, because of the specialist nature of the housed equipment, the ability to ground together or isolate individual cabinets in a bayed suite was also important. The IT department needed 1000mm deep cabinets to accept their servers, and, unlike the Broadcast cabinets which are normally open front and rear, thermal management considerations required fully ventilated doors, either single or twin "wardrobe" style. The doors can be fitted or removed when the racks are bayed together. In all three applications special panel mountings, adjustable when the racks are bayed together, were designed to give maximum space for cables or the thick slides fitted to the Compaq servers. *** Ends: body copy 342 words *** Notes to Editors.
